A fossil coral perspective on western tropical Pacific climate 350 ka

چکیده
[1] The nature of tropical climate variability 350 ka is addressed using dO and Sr/Ca records from a modern and a fossil coral from Vanuatu (southwestern tropical Pacific Ocean). Modern El Niño events at Vanuatu produce positive coral dO and Sr/Ca anomalies; similar anomalies observed in the fossil coral records suggest that El Niño was operative 350 kyr ago. Seasonal variations in coral Sr/Ca, a sea surface temperature (SST) proxy, have the same amplitude in both corals, whereas seasonal dO variations are smaller in the fossil coral than in the modern coral. This is consistent with displacement of the South Pacific Convergence Zone toward the southwest during the boreal summer 350 ka. Mathematical modeling results preclude warmer SST and higher SSS at Vanuatu during this time, but permit the surface ocean to be 2 C cooler and 0–2 psu fresher than today. Assessing the potential of variations in late Quaternary seawater Sr/Ca remains the largest obstacle to accurately reconstructing tropical SST using pristine fossil corals.

Western Pacific coral DO records of anomalous Holocene variability in the El Niño--Southern Oscillation
[1] Skeletal oxygen isotope ratios in Holocene Porites corals from northern Papua New Guinea record decreases in sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall during El Niño events. Threshold analysis of seven fossil coral dO records spanning the period 7.6–5.4 ka (thousand years ago) shows 8–12 El Niño events/century, significantly less than the 23 events/century recorded by the NINO3.4 Index. متن کاملRole of tropical Pacific SSTs in global medieval hydroclimate: A modeling study
[1] The role of tropical Pacific SSTs in driving global medieval hydroclimate is assessed. Using fossil coral records from Palmyra Atoll, tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) boundary conditions are derived for the period 1320–1462 A.D. These boundary conditions consist of La Niña‐like mean state conditions in the tropical Pacific with inter‐annual and decadal variability about that a...
متن کاملCoral records of central tropical Pacific radiocarbon variability during the last millennium
[1] The relationship between decadal to centennial changes in ocean circulation and climate is difficult to discern using the sparse and discontinuous instrumental record of climate and, as such, represents a large uncertainty in coupled ocean‐atmosphere general circulation models. We present new modern and fossil coral radiocarbon (DC) records from Palmyra (6°N, 162°W) and Christmas (2°N, 157°...
متن کاملCoupled model simulations of mid-Holocene ENSO and comparisons with coral oxygen isotope records
The sensitivity of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) to changes in mean climate is investigated for simulations of pre-industrial and mid-Holocene (6000 years before present) climate using the Hadley Centre coupled atmosphere-ocean model, HadCM3. Orbitally-forced changes in insolation in the mid-Holocene produce changes in seasonality which may alter ENSO amplitude and frequency. The model si...
متن کاملTropical–North Pacific Climate Linkages over the Past Four Centuries*
Analyses of instrumental data demonstrate robust linkages between decadal-scale North Pacific and tropical Indo-Pacific climatic variability. These linkages encompass common regime shifts, including the noteworthy 1976 transition in Pacific climate. However, information on Pacific decadal variability and the tropical high-latitude climate connection is limited prior to the twentieth century. He...
